Where are your binoculars pointed?

Big Idea: To go on the Adventure, you need a clear picture/vision of where you are and where you want to go.

To get anywhere (but lost) in life we need a vision for where we want to go and how we hope to get there. Question--What do you have your binoculars focused on? Where do you hope to wind up one day?

The world around us tells us to focus our sights on becoming wealthy, comfortable, famous, in-control, independent, etc. Perhaps some of us have already set out on the wide and well-travelled road that leads to those things. It’s important, however, to remember Jesus’ counsel about being careful about which road we take. (See Matt 5:13-15, 6:33)

Are you willing to walk?

Big Idea: To progress on the Adventure, you need to take steps to walk with Christ daily and build up your strength (TRAINING for the Soul)

We often wish (or even desire) we were more healthy (mature) spiritually and relationally. Many of us have even “tried” at different times to improve but did not realize lasting results in one or more areas of life.

If we want BIG changes to happen in our spiritual or relational health, we have to take small steps. We have to stop trying and start training. Our development as disciples can’t merely be a weekend exercise; it needs to be a daily discipline.

Reading/Reflection and Regular Prayer

No matter where you are on the spiritual continuum, two practices are catalysts for spiritual growth: Bible Reading/Reflection and regular Prayer. Through Engage or one of the resources below, begin a regular (daily or minimally 3-5 times per week) rhythm of Bible engagement and prayer throughout your days.

Spiritual Discipline

There are many spiritual practices that help us stay connected to the vine (Jesus—John 15). Choose one training exercise (spiritual discipline) you will practice the remainder of the Great Adventure. If you are unsure where to begin, select from one of the following (page references are from the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook by Adele Calhoun): Bible Study (164), Fasting (218), Silence and Solitude (107, 111), or Journaling (56).

Share

Share your training commitment with one or more people and ask them to check in with you and encourage your progress.

Where is your compass?

Big Idea: To navigate the Adventure, you need direction where the trail gets confusing or difficult (EQUIPPING for Life)

It is in the “dailiness” of life that your emotional, relational and spiritual maturity is revealed. In other words, how we live matters. Your daily life reveals and reinforces , or shapes, what is within you. Your habits, your default behaviors, your patterns of thinking, the attitudes that lead to your actions...all reveal the reality of our lives. To live a healthy life - filled with the good fruit of God - you must equip yourself in the practicalities and skills of life to journey in health and maturity.

Who is your canoe?

Big Idea: To make the most of the Great Adventure, you need a good set of traveling companions (PARTNERS for the Journey).

God did not create us to journey through the Great Adventure alone... we were made for community and one another...we were made to have partners for the journey. This applies to all areas of our lives, especially the adventure of faith. Never before have we faced the connection challenge of having growing partnerships (people in the canoe with us) who love us, serve needs, challenge our growth, and help us navigate life as we do the same for them. Who do you have in your canoe? Who can you invite in or ask for permission to join?

Putting it all together, rule for life.

Big Idea: To keep advancing on the Great Adventure, commit to a “Rule for Life”.

“Nurturing a growing spirituality in our present-day culture calls for a thoughtful, conscious, purposeful plan...The problem, however, is our busyness and lack of intentionality. Often, we find ourselves unfocused, distracted, and spiritually adrift. Few of us have a conscious plan for intentionally developing our spiritual lives --Pete Scazzero, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality

“A Rule of Life offers unique and regular rhythms that free and open each person to the will and presence of Christ. The spiritual practices of a rule provide a way to partner with the Holy Spirit for personal transformation. --Adele Calhoun, Spiritual Disciplines Handbook
