Breakthrough Urban Ministries

Breakthrough has been serving the neighborhood of East Garfield Park for nearly 30 years, partnering with those affected by poverty to build connections, develop skills, and open doors of opportunity. Values include God, People, Relationships, Redemption, Structure, Collaboration, Community and Racial Justice. Breakthrough supports people through:

  • Education & Youth Development
    • Education & youth development opportunities for students ages 2–24, with a focus on parent engagement.
  • Economic Opportunity
    • Providing opportunities & resources that foster financial wellness & economic stability.
  • Housing
    • Transitional & permanent supportive housing for individuals & families experiencing homelessness. Daily supportive services for those in crisis.
  • Health & Wellness
    • Behavioral health, food access, sports & fitness programs, & medical care for individuals in East Garfield Park.
  • Violence Prevention
    • Reducing violence through a comprehensive, scientific, public health approach that changes behaviors & eliminates the conditions that allow violence to spread.
  • Spiritual Formation
    • Individuals have the option to participate in devotions, prayer, Bible studies and spiritual direction.

Meal Group Leader

Daily | All Mealtimes
Coordinate a group to provide a meal to our guests in the Men's or Women's Centers.  Meals can be catered, prepared at home, or delivered.

Fresh Market Food Pantry
Daytime shifts are available on Wednesdays–Saturdays.  

Breakthrough Youth Network
Help with Sports & Fitness Academy, Arts & Tech Academy, Student Achievement Program, or Breakthrough Beyond (mentoring & teen night).

Veterans Initiative
Engage as a veteran through mentoring and leadership initiatives.

Daily | Daytime & Evening Hours
Assist a team of gardeners to grow & harvest produce for our kitchens & neighborhood.

Greater Chicago Food Depository
Daily | Daytime Hours
Help Breakthrough each food credit by sorting food, repacking food, labeling, & gathering donations. Register at chicagosfoodbank.org/volunteer & indicate Breakthrough affiliation on the application.
